DESCRIPTIONS

Accommodations & Layout

"Starside" is a beautiful classic vessel for the discerning yachtsman. Her classic lines are sure to catch your eye and steal your heart. Being that she was built in the classic era of wooden boats, the attention to detail of the craftsmen who built her is evident throughout. Photos do not do her justice - she must be seen to be appreciated.

Her exterior is constructed of painted and varnished wood, and offers a forward cockpit for your cruising pleasure. Stepping aft from the forward cockpit and walking along her side decks, there is a fantastic grabrail close at hand to make sure that you do not spill your drink...or end up there while making your way aft.

Stepping into the cockpit and helm, your eye is greeted by more beautiful wood joinery. Classic seats for the captain and mate afford a beautiful view, and the helm is nicely positioned for great sight lines from all directions. Underfoot lives the new electric Elco motor and batteries. Under the aft seat is abundant storage.

Upon opening the companionway and stepping below, you are able to step back in time while taking in her fine details and craftsmanship. In the forepeak, there are two straight settees which are great for entertaining. There is a forward cockpit access/ventilation on the front end of the coachroof. As you step further aft, there is an enclosed head on the starboard side. Opposite to port is the comfortable galley with sink, stove, and ample storage throughout.

"Starside" is a fine classic vessel not to be missed! Please let me know if you have any specific questions.

From the Owner

Starside is a very rare 1930 Elco Marinette (only 3 on the planet that I know of). She’s the perfect pocket cruiser at 27’ (sleeps 4 w/full galley and head). She is cedar planked: her cabin is oak and mahogany; and her deck and cockpit are teak. She also has all of her original brightwork. She’s basically a time capsule!

Before I purchased her, it’s my understanding that Starside was owned by a Florida boat builder, Rand Spaes, who kept her in pristine condition and did most of her topside-rebuilding and also glassed her below the waterline for longevity. I was told he kept Starside along with other boats on his property, so Starside has been lovingly cared for and kept in her original condition.

Under my care (several years after Mr. Spaes passed away), Starside has been completely recaulked & refastened using “monel fasteners,” which I was told ensures that she won’t need to be refastened for another 30+ years! Her work was completed by Hartge Yacht Yard, a reputable wooden boat shipyard. I also converted her to an electric propulsion system, because Elco, which stands for “Electric Launch Company,” is still in business and is one of the leaders in marine electric engines. So, in the spirit of her history, I installed the Elco electric motor and 6 AGM batteries. Besides that, I’ve replaced her cutlass bearing and rub rails, and basically took care of all age-related wood repairs while she was being refastened. She has brand new electronics as well. In other words, she is turn-key and ready for her next owner.

All she needs at this point is a fresh coat of varnish & a loving owner!
