Today we celebrate National Maritime Day. Ninety years ago, Congress declared National Maritime Day to commemorate the American steamship Savannah’s voyage in 1819 from the United States to England, marking the first successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean with steam propulsion. Today we honor the U.S. Merchant Mariners who have actively participated in every conflict since the American Revolution by delivering supplies, ammunition, and fuel to American troops and their allies on foreign soil. We thank you for your dedication and service!
