MJM has been family owned and operated since 2002. Founder, Bob Johnstone brought on his wife Mary and his son Peter to lead the company with passion and experience of true yachtsmen.
Before Bob and the family took to the motorboat industry, Bob cofounded J/Boats, Inc in 1977. J/Boats are the world’s leading brand of performance sailboats with over 14,000 boats sailing around the world. Bob became a member of the National Sailing Hall of Fame and a recipient of the Mystic Seaport America and Sea honor. Bob and his family enjoyed sailing, but as they got older they found quality cruising time is on motorboats. Bob was inspired by his wife, Mary, to name the new motorboat brand, MJM- Mary Johnstone’s Motorboat.
Bob’s priority with MJM was to create a boat that was easily docked single-handedly, seat multiple couples comfortably, and handle a cruise of 25 knots to outrun waves offshore. Bob’s vision was to combine features of his favorite powerboats- WW II Elco PT Boat, Carolina sportfish, Adirondack runabout, 1950’s Matthews cruiser and the Maine lobster boat. Bob brainstormed with his son Peter and yacht designer, Doug Zurn, and the signature MJM look was born.
The collaborative efforts between the Johnstones, yacht designers, and Boston BoatWorks keeps the family actively engaged in bringing each new model to fruition and running it exhaustively to make sure it meets all their personal standards.
