We recently heard from our Maryland clients, who have been busy making memories aboard their Back Cove 37, Indigo.
Here is the update:
We ran out of lake (Lake Michigan) and are currently heading straight west this morning leaving Michigan City, IN, towards Hammond, IN. We ran the entire eastern side of Lake Michigan for the last four weeks, staying at the various towns and harbors along the way.
It was a tale of two lakes. Blue skies, warm days and light breezes until the winds pick up; then the lake turns into a monster. One memorable part of the trip (not in a good way) was our stay in Grand Haven, MI. The Municipal Dock is the first dockage in the harbor and is right at the center of town. A great spot until the weather turned. We were expecting high winds the next day, both my neighbor and I had tied numerous additional lines on our vessels. He was a 60’ trawler and the first vessel in. I was the second. While Ruth and I made a run for provisions as we were getting back my neighbor was moving his 60’ boat leaving me the first boat and very exposed to the constant rollers coming into the harbor. With Indigo bobbing and swaying every which direction we made the immediate call to get out of there. It took me another 45 minutes to confirm a new slip further up the creek and we moved. We have had days of perfect flat water and other days forecast were for 1’ to 2’ and they were north of 4’, short and very choppy. We have only been stuck once for weather and that was our stay at Grand Haven but we have traveled when other boaters would not.
Current stats are 64 travels days, 2,092 NM’s, 1,582 gallons of fuel and 105 total trip days.
I expect to be back in MD to pick up my truck at the end of month. If all goes as planned I will be coming through during the Annapolis boat show.
Attached are a few pictures of the various conditions on the lake. It’s very different than boating on the bay and any area along the east coast. You have one huge body of water with protected harbors every 20 or 30 miles up and down the coast. Just don’t get caught out there between harbors in bad weather.
Fair winds and calm seas to Indigo on the next part of her trip!
